Integrate Downloads/Library into a tab instead of a new window

by Campbell Kerr | 5 months ago | in General / other

Opening Downloads/Bookmarks/History currently opens a new window.

Please integrate them as a tab instead. Chrome/Edge has this feature.

Thanks!

I have also posted the same idea, but it's missing. Glad yours is here, so upvote from me.

I additionally reiterate my request - that no features are removed during the transition and that the new tabs are in the same style/design as Photon is.

And fix the speed of history items removal, please.
When I select all items for FB or Imdb (more 300) it is deleting them very slowly, in batches of 300 items.

This is really needed. Please add this to Firefox.

It would be great to replace the side panels. To the library, etc. in a new tab.

Side panels are okay, useful even, but the library indeed could be made a separate page. Maybe even merged with this https://mozilla.crowdicity.com/post/718914

Library Window is too antique and complex it should be gone in v89 and Bookmark, History, and Download should open as tab similar to FF settings which open as a tab not a new window.

Yes! and please use native progress bars instead of those blue squares.

Look and Feel should be consistent with the OS, in my case, MacOS.

I'd like the downloads window to remain being a window (or at least to have that option) to be able to close the browser and let the files to keep downloading.

Though, currently this has low benefits - not much memory is freed if downloads window stays open (it still has 7 processes in the background, that consume around 700 MB)

I find that every time I close firefox, i forget about that damn window and it remains open - I would like for firefox to close completely when exiting the main window (even if it needs to prompt about incomplete downloads).

This used to be possible with Xul, you could paste the downloads.xul url and have it in a tab.

I'm currently using an addon "Download Manager S3" for this functionality but it's clunky, ugly and no dark mode 😎

I don't know where I'm going to comment on a particular subject. So, go here: Firefox 89.0 (and earlier) cannot properly integrate with Internet Download Manager (IDM). On YouTube, when I want to download a video, the IDM window doesn't appear. Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Edge Legacy do it with ease!
(Please show me where to click to comment about topic above. Show me the way. Couldn't find it here. Sorry for bad English. I'm using Google Translator. Thank you)

To me Downloads window is better than in a tab but a better option IMO would be in the sidebar like Edge and Vivaldi does. No need for yet another tab (and searching for it) for a temporary event.

Yeah good idea about the sidebar! Personally I hate the window - it's old and clunky.

Preferably introduce this as an option. On another note it's already somewhat possible. Just open chrome://browser/content/places/places.xhtml which can also be bookmarked.

So tired of inconsiderate requests. You feel like you have the right to ask for changes that effect the whole community without regards to would it work for them.

Not against FF having this as an *option* but to make changes without options is blatant disregard to most of us. I personally prefer new windows, but options are never a problem.

Either this or change the slightly change the web-extension API to allow the "tab.create" function to open "about:downloads" ... That would allow an addon to open the download library in a new tab, which currently isnt doable. (ref. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozi...PI/tabs/create) Have an upvote regardless.

No thank you. It is better as it is now than as another thing as a tab. Especially since moving it into the tab would cause them to drop functionality, make it only able to display 2 lines of text in between the padding, and be filled with useless animations.

Plus, we gain even more things with separate windows. Sure, you can "drag out" a tab to be a different window for multitasking with side-by-side stuff, but then it's surrounded with all the browser chrome (toolbars, etc), wasting even more screen space. Custom windows are GOOD.

You could use type chrome://browser/content/places/places.xhtml in address bar to view bookmarks and historys in a tab as them in a window.
